The Ballad of Charlotte Dymond - Camleford

Charlotte Dymond was found murdered on the slopes of Roughtor, Cornwall's second highest peak, near Camelford on Sunday 14th April 1844.

The supposed murderer, Matthew Weeks, Charlotte's lover and a crippled farm worker, was later hanged at Bodmin Goal, although there is some doubt over whether he did indeed commit the crime.

Many times since, and especially on the anniversary of her murder, Charlotte has been seen walking, wearing a gown, red shawl and silk bonnet.

A memorial stone now marks the site of Miss Dymond's murder, and her story has been brought back to life through "The Ballad of Charlotte Dymond", written by a Cornish poet named Charles Causley.
