The Queen's House Ghost on the Tulip Staircase

The Tulip Staircase Photograph

On Sunday the 19th of June 1966, the Rev and Mrs R W Hardy, a retired couple on holiday from Canada, were visiting the Queen’s House, part of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London. Having previously read about the Tulip staircase located in the Queen’s House, they were interested to see it for themselves. While they were there, at the foot of the staircase and looking upward, Mr Hardy took his now famous photograph.

The figure in the photo appears to be climbing the stairs chasing a second and maybe a third figure.

Rev Hardy described to the Museum the conditions under which the photograph was taken- His wife watched the stairs to ensure that no passers by were in the way, he also said that the stairs were barred by a "barrier and no admittance sign". The photograph was said to have been taken between 5.15pm and 5.30pm.

The latest sighting

On Monday 20 May 02 at 9.45am, a Gallery Assistant and two colleagues were talking about which breaks we were on, when something caught his eye. A double door from the Bridge Room closed and he thought at first it was a woman who does the talks at weekends, then he realised the woman had just glided across the balcony and went through the wall on west side.

He could not believe what he saw. He went very cold and the hairs on his arms and neck stood on end. He and his colleagues went into the Queen’s Presence Room and he looked down towards the old Queen’s Bedroom, and something passed through the ante-room and out through the wall. His two colleagues did also feel cold at that time.

The lady was dressed in a white-grey colour, old fashioned, something like a crinoline type dress.
